In August the U.S. House of Representatives passed their version of the Farm Bill. Senator Harkin, is now working with the Senate Ag Committee on their version of the bill. Brad Lubben, Extension Public Policy Specialist, will explain the differences in the two versions and the process to get a bill passed.

As world population increases the demand for food increases but there is only 10 percent more land that can be brought into production - most of that in South America and Africa. Expansion of the middle class in high population counties like China and India is also increasing the demand for meats, fruits and vegetables.

US beef exports are gradually regaining some of the markets they lost from the BSE problems. Meanwhile pork exports, which benefited from the beef problems, are still strong but are slipping slightly. Hog prices are in an autumn decline, but prospects for 2008 are bright.
