--Nebraska wheat fields are plagued for the second straight year by a bad case of scab, or Fusarium head blight, thanks to an unusually wet spring. Symptoms include premature bleaching of one or more wheat spikelets or the entire immature head. It is too late in the growing season to combat the problem this year. Stephen Wegulo, University of Nebraska-Lincoln extension plant pathologist will discuss how to handle the harvested crop next week on Market Journal.
--The Direct and Countercyclical Payment Program, or DCP, sign-up period began this week. This is the first application of the recently approved 2008 farm bill.
--Intermodal shipping containers have revolutionized freight shipping around the world. In the June Nebraska Farmer, you can read about an 18-month study of container shipping sponsored by the Nebraska Grain and Feed Association and the state’s corn, soybean and wheat commodity associations.

      There are still profits for cattle producers (Length: 5:09)
The latest Canadian BSE incident and the U.S. dairy buyout will not impact cattle markets. Darrell Mark, University of Nebraska-Lincoln extension marketing specialist says there is a premium in the deferred cattle futures and his analysis shows feeding cattle at $7 corn can still be profitable.

      Claims for crop insurance deadlines here (Length: 2:48)
The final planting date for full insurance coverage for soybeans in Nebraska was June 15. Rob Heyen of Crop Insurance Solutions of Milford urges producers to contact their agent if they have any situations related to late or prevented planting.

      Value added research is important for soybean producers (Length: 8:21)
Low linoleaic acid soybeans are a major success story in value added crops. Peter Goldsmith, associate professor of agribusiness management, University of Illinois says research is key to increasing the producer’s bottom line.

      Still time to replant corn and soybeans (Length: 3:04)
There is still time to plant corn and soybeans according to Charlie Wortmann, University of Nebraska-Lincoln nutrient management specialist. Wortmann says you need to change to a shorter maturity variety and also may need to apply an additional 100 or 150 pounds of nitrogen to corn if it is turning yellow.

More rain across the state this next week. Al Dutcher, University of Nebraska-Lincoln extension state climatologist, says temperatures will drop into the 80’s early in the week and then warm up toward next weekend. Rain throughout the period, again!
